What A2P 10DLC actually is
A2P 10DLC stands for Application-to-Person messaging over 10-digit long codes — the standard local phone numbers most shops text from. US carriers require every business sending automated texts to register two things: your brand (who you are) and your campaign (what kind of messages you send). Unregistered traffic gets throttled, filtered, or blocked — which is why "the reminder never arrived" happens.
10DLC keeps your messages deliverable. It is not consent, and it is not TCPA compliance — you need those too.
Why contractors specifically need it
It's easy to assume 10DLC is only for marketers. It isn't: appointment reminders, "tech is on the way" texts, and dispatch confirmations are all A2P traffic. If you send them from a normal number through a platform like Twilio, registration is required for reliable delivery.
How to register — step by step
- Gather your brand details — legal business name, EIN, address, website, and a contact. Accuracy matters; mismatches cause rejections.
- Register the brand through your messaging provider (e.g., Twilio) with The Campaign Registry. You'll get a trust/vetting score that affects your throughput.
- Register the campaign — describe your use case (e.g., "customer care / appointment reminders"), provide sample messages, and show your opt-in flow and opt-out language.
- Link your numbers to the approved campaign and confirm messages are flowing.
- Keep it current — update the registration if your use case or opt-in changes.
The campaign step is where most shops stumble, because carriers want to see a real opt-in and opt-out — the same consent flow the TCPA requires. Getting consent right solves both problems at once.
